Review

The HERTZ DCX 170.3 are one of those speakers that combine excellent functionality and ease of installation all in one package at a super affordable price – see more reviews of Hertz speakers. The minimalistic design of these speakers helps them integrate perfectly with the interior of any car. They can even take a pretty bland interior and turn it into something that looks cool.

These coaxial speakers feature a built-in crossover that allows them to beautifully channel those midrange frequencies to a treated paper woofer that features a polyurethane surround. Low frequencies are also channeled similarly, but the DCX 170.3’s frequency range starts at 60 Hz, which won’t allow it to capture those super-low notes very well.

High frequencies, on the other hand, are directed to the PEI dome tweeter. Those frequencies usually tend to sound good on moderate volume, but with the volume taken up a notch, higher notes tend to be shrill. However, knowing that it’s already pretty hard for any pair of speakers to reproduce such high frequencies, the DCX 170.3 manages to pull off a good job.

The unit weighs at just 1.23 lbs, which isn’t what I expected at all when I first saw it. I thought it’d be much heavier. I think the choice of materials used in these speakers has helped them hit the nail on the head in terms of balancing effectiveness and portability.

The awesome thing about these speakers is that you’ll experience virtually no resonance at all, courtesy of the thermoplastic polyurethane surrounds. I can’t begin to stress enough how much I’ve enjoyed the quality coming out of these fairly inexpensive speakers when compared to its higher-priced counterparts. Definitely worth your while.
