The DS18 ZXI series subwoofer and the Skar Audio EVL series subwoofers are some of the most popular subwoofers on the market. In my opinion, the DS18 ZXI series subwoofer is a better option. Let’s compare the two options so you know why I prefer the DS18 ZXI series over the EVL subwoofers.

Available Sizes
One of the factors that influence subwoofer purchase decisions is size. The ability to transmit low frequencies is typically influenced by the size, affecting audio quality and power handling.
The DS18 ZXI series subwoofers come in five sizes ranging from 6.5″, 8″, 10″, 12″, and 15″. On the other hand, the Skar Audio EVL series comes in six sizes which are 6.5″, 8″, 10″, 12″, 15″ and 18″.
12″ is generally a good option for those who want a decent sound level. The DS18 ZXI series and SKAR Audio EVL offer a 12″ subwoofer that you could consider adding to your existing audio system for more bass.
However, if you are someone like me and prefer loud, high-quality sound, I recommend the 15″ ZXI15.4D from the DS18 ZXI series. It has an excellent bass output and frequency response. It might add a serious thump to an existing audio system of your car. The 18″ EVL-18 from Skar Audio gives tough competition to the 15″ ZXI15.4D. However, the sound quality isn’t that great.

Build Quality
A subwoofer’s build quality and construction play an important role in how your car’s audio system will sound. Moreover, it will also determine the longevity of the subwoofer.
The DS18 ZXI series subwoofers have been built with the highest quality materials and are pretty reliable in terms of build quality. A large foam edging and a paper and glass fiber cone are two features that make the DS18 ZXI series subwoofers so durable.
They also include an aluminum basket that is bright red, ensuring its integrity and endurance. In addition, dual voice coils make it possible to fine-tune the system and make it easier to incorporate more speakers into the audio system.
The EVL subwoofers from Skar Audio completely reinvent what low-end sound output can be. The performance of these subwoofers is a direct result of the expertise that went into producing the entire series. These subwoofers have several distinctive, cutting-edge design elements that place them in a class by themselves and enable them to create highly accurate and booming bass.
Hence, I think both the DS18 ZXI series and the Skar Audio EVL series subwoofers are equal in terms of build quality, and both will not disappoint you in any way.
Sound
The DS18 ZXI series subwoofers have impeccable sound capabilities and have a distinct level for each model. For instance, the ZXI12.4D subwoofer provides a powerful thudding effect that makes the music sound better.
It features a 3-inch vocal coil designed to produce booming bass that is distortion-free while withstanding high power levels with remarkable efficiency. This sub can play higher frequencies up to 10Hz while maintaining outstanding accuracy and clarity.
The ZX112.4D stands out from other subwoofers because it features an incredibly effective coil that can handle significant power and has a superior dB rating of 89.2 dB. This sub is also able to cope with everything you toss at it because of its power handling ratings of 1000W RMS and 2000W MAX.
Skar subwoofers are cylindrical and have no vents. Most subs in the EVL series offer strong bass without distortion or background noise thanks to this. Depending on the type, these subwoofers may produce up to 400W of energy and are driven by a Class D amplifier with an output of 80W or 300W.
However, I thought the Skar Audio EVL series subwoofers’ auto-calibration feature was slightly underwhelming. The speakers can be tricky to attach, heavy in size, and don’t always work.
Additionally, there is some squeaking around ultra-lows. Moreover, while the 12″ EVL-12 offers excellent bass and provides great value for money, the 15″ and 18″ subs did not impress me.
They fell short compared to the 15″ sub in the ZXI series. The sound quality is low, and it doesn’t feel great when they start bumping the bass. I expected more from these larger-size subs. Therefore, I prefer the DS18 ZXI series in terms of sound quality.
Price
The price of the subwoofer is among the most crucial factors I consider when making a purchase. A good subwoofer will have an affordable price, good construction quality, and great sound.
The DS18 ZXI series subwoofers range from $119.95 to $364.95, while the Skar Audio EVL series subwoofers range from $59.49-$280.49. As you can see, the Skar Audio EVL series is much more affordable but lacks sound quality and solid bass.
On the other hand, the DS18 ZXI series may have a higher price bracket, but the quality and sound range you will get is impeccable. Therefore, if you want a long-lasting subwoofer, I would suggest you go for the DS18 ZXI series without a doubt.
Final Verdict
The DS18 ZXI series subwoofers, in my personal experience, outperform the Skar Audio EVL series. They come out on top in this contest thanks to their excellent durability and sound quality.
As a result, if you can choose a DS18 ZXI series subwoofer or an EVL series subwoofer, I would recommend you go for the former because it is the better option. While the DS18 ZXI series would put a dent in your wallet, these subwoofers are worth it because they would give you fantastic sound at low to extremely high volumes.
